A husband and wife from Liaoning, China, found themselves in a puzzling situation when they had to piece together 140,000 yuan ($21,300) worth of banknotes that were shredded by the man`s 85 year-old father.

The man, identified only by the name Chen, told local television network Qianshan Evening News, that his father had sold his house in Anshan for 200,000 yuan ($30,400) last October. Chen`s father then proceeded to cut up more than three quarters of the cash payment out of paranoia that his son and daughter-in-law were after his money.

Chen had wanted his father to put the money in the bank for safekeeping, but his father`s unexpected reaction to the suggestion left him and his wife with having to glue together 1,080 hundred dollar banknotes. The process took the couple 17 hours of work a day, and three months to complete.

Thankfully, Chen`s father left 60,000 ($9,100) yuan of the stash intact. The couple has since managed to exchange the bank notes for new notes, and deposited all 200,000 yuan in the bank so Chen`s father wouldn`t pull an Edward Scissorhands again.
